Follow on Google News | Townsend-AllCell Joint Venture Announced to Commercialize Battery Thermal Management TechnologyThe new venture builds on Townsend's existing energy investments, including Dow Kokam, and will have rights to use AllCell's phase change material (PCM) technology in the automotive battery and grid energy storage industries.
A number of recent high-profile incidents involving lithium-ion battery systems have emphasized to the industry how integral thermal management is to the future of electric vehicles (EVs). AllCell’s PCM technology, already commercialized in military, medical and light electric vehicle (LEV) applications, is currently under evaluation by several global automakers. The PCM technology can rapidly absorb large amounts of heat, allowing auto battery designers to eliminate the bulky, expensive and inefficient liquid cooling systems common in current EVs. AllCell’s PCM involves no moving parts, requires no power to operate and continues to protect batteries from overheating even when the vehicle is parked. Passive thermal management is similarly critical for stationary energy storage, particularly systems that are exposed to high ambient temperatures and solar loading. “This venture is a critical part of AllCell’s long-term strategy,” according to CEO Said Al-Hallaj. “The partnership with Townsend allows us to work with a world-class organization with an enviable track record of success. ”We are very excited about incorporating the AllCell technology into our portfolio of battery related investments,” About AllCell Technologies AllCell Technologies designs and manufactures lithium-ion battery packs for transportation and renewable energy applications. The company’s patented thermal management technology allows production of compact, lightweight, and long-lasting batteries. AllCell’ About Townsend Ventures Formed in 2007, Townsend Ventures serves as the primary investment vehicle for Townsend Capital’s energy related investments. For more than 35 years Townsend Capital has successfully navigated business cycles with a macro-economic investment philosophy. Once primarily focused on commercial real estate investment and development, in early 2008 the company shifted its investment strategy to the emerging energy sector with a concentration on energy efficiency and storage technologies. Deploying senior executive talent to such ventures, Townsend maintains an active role in the management and direction of each of its investments. www.townsendcapital.com For more information, please contact: AllCell Technologies Jake Edie Tel: +1-773-922-1155 x216 jedie@allcelltech.com www.allcelltech.com Townsend Ventures Richard R.
