Follow on Google News | New Texting Service Sends Shabbat ReminderA new text messaging service in Atlanta sends a text message 20 minutes before shabbos to remind you to stop and light the candles.
ATLANTA -May 8, 2012 A new service will make sure you never forget a shabbos time, or get caught out and about when it's time to be home lighting candles. The new "CandlelightATL" With the new service you get the weekly candle lighting time sent to you 20 minutes before Shabbos begins, reminding you to head home if you are out. ---------------- People can sign up for the free service by simply sending a text message to 90210 (easy to remember number) and the message: candlelight. ---------------- The texting method of communication is welcomed by many who many not be at a computer to get an email alert, or the younger set who rarely use email for personal communication. Chabad of Georgia Associate Director Rabbi Isser New explains, "We began the program as a way to bring Judaism directly to people in an unintrusive way. It is a creative, fun, and surprising way to reach out to the Jewish community." Jessica Kraitzick, a mother of two, sometimes eats dinner long before the sabbath. She says she loves the service because it reminds her to light the candles at the correct time, and not to always light them before dinner. And in the winter "it's even better because shabbos starts earlier and it reminds her to get the candles lit." Kraizick also says, "I get a smile on my face getting the message because it reminds me it is coming from Chabad and I signed up at a special event." She says she sees the communication as "a nice added touch." The Izigg company has created this texting service (also known as sms) to help businesses get the word out about sales, contests, and much more. Chabad of Georgia saw the ingenuity of it and decided to try it as a reminder service. Chabad of Georgia regular David Liniado is one of the founders of the Izigg company. Liniado says, "Our lives become so centered around our mobile devices, it's no wonder that Chabad of Georgia is utilizing our text servcie to reach their community." He adds, "This is one of the thousands of ways our businesses and organizations are using mobile to make people's lives more efficient and to give them what they want when they want it."
