Exposure Risks Associated with Sporothrix schenckii Examined in Online Video

May 6, 2012 - PRLog -- Today, the IAQ Video Network and Cochrane & Associates announced the release of another online video to help educate the public about issues that may impact their health.  The latest educational video discusses exposure to Sporothrix schenckii and sporotrichosis.

Sporotrichosis is an infection caused by a fungus known as Sporothrix schenckii. Outbreaks of sporotrichosis have been documented in the United States, Western Australia, and Brazil.  The exact incidence of sporotrichosis is unknown, but people at increased risk for sporotrichosis usually have occupational or recreational exposures related to agriculture, horticulture, forestry, or gardening.

“Skin infections are the most common form of infection following exposure, although pulmonary infection can occur if a person inhales the microscopic, airborne fungal spores,” reported Paul Cochrane, President of Cochrane and Associates, the company behind the IAQ Video Network and the new public outreach video.  “People who handle thorny plants, sphagnum moss, or bales of hay are at increased risk of getting sporotrichosis. The infection is more common among people with weakened immune systems, but it can also occur in otherwise healthy people. We hope this video helps to educate people about ways to protect their family’s health from this fungal pathogen.”
