May 4, 2012 - PRLog -- Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada announced the recall of approximately 17,000 Miflex High Pressure Scuba Diving Hoses.  According to the CPSC release, the hoses were sold at scuba diving retailers and online between May 2009 and April of 2012.

There have been 189 reports of the hose failing, but fortunately no reports of injuries or death.  According to the CPSC release, “The high pressure hose is used to monitor cylinder pressure for the air supply in tanks for scuba diving. The hoses have MFX stamped on the hose’s end fitting. They were sold as individual replacement gauge hoses and as cascade hoses …”

Product failures like this can result in potentially deadly outcomes and be extremely costly to manufacturers and distributors. When a part failure comes to light it is important that the root cause of the failure be quickly investigated and understood. One company that has extensive experience in this field is EMSL Analytical, Inc.

At EMSL, the company provides a wide range of material testing, characterization and forensic laboratory services.  “EMSL’s Materials Science Division was established to help clients develop solutions to challenges in manufacturing, quality assurance, and research and development,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL. “Product recalls resulting from material failures are a fairly common occurrence.  Fortunately, in the case of the high pressure diving hose recall it was caught before any tragic events took place.  When situations like these occur, EMSL’s renowned scientists can be put to task helping to identify the root cause of a product failure to resolve these cases quickly,” he continued.

EMSL’s laboratory is supported by Ph.D. scientists and a broad array of instrumentation that can apply a full spectrum of standard and customized analyses including elemental and chemical, structural, particle, surface, contaminant, mechanical, failure, and bio-effectiveness to any project.  To learn more about materials testing services, please visit www.EMSL.com, call (800)220-3675, or email info@EMSL.com.
