May 4, 2012 - PRLog -- National Geographic recently posted a story on their website regarding air fresheners.  “Earth-Friendly & Organic Air Fresheners” discusses both traditional air fresheners and eco-friendly options today’s consumers have available.

The article highlights concerns over traditional air fresheners that millions of Americans have in their homes, offices and even schools. In addition to the common complaint that most air fresheners simply mask any unpleasant odors, it discusses common ingredients in these products and states, “Other toxic ingredients, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), benzene and formaldehyde, cause neurological damage and cancer.”

Formaldehyde has come under public scrutiny in recent years and is commonly found in the indoor environment due to its use in construction materials, building furnishings and some consumer products. Formaldehyde can cause both short and long term health concerns.

The National Toxicology Program, an interagency program of the Department of Health and Human Services, named formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen in its 12th Report on Carcinogens.  The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) also classifies formaldehyde as a human carcinogen.

“Many manufactured household products contain significant levels of VOCs or formaldehyde.  Our laboratory is capable of testing products of all sizes for chemical off-gassing,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, a leading formaldehyde and IAQ testing laboratory.     “Formaldehyde and VOCs are used in so many modern materials that reducing exposure, not adding to it, should be on people’s minds.  At EMSL, the laboratory offers air testing to identify IAQ contaminants as well as consumer product testing to determine which products contain these chemicals,” he continued.

EMSL has sponsored a video about the hazards associated with formaldehyde in indoor environments.  It can be seen at:
