Walking Miracles.Org Founding Donors Dinner
CHARLESTON, WV (04/10/2012 –
After two challenging childhood cancer experiences and years of servicing and studying patient care, Brett Wilson, a Christian childhood cancer survivor, was inspired to found WMO-Walking Miracles.Org 5 years ago. He wanted to change the face of cancer survivorship support services by providing patient navigation, education and counseling services in WV. He started by volunteering his time and experience to his local coalition and speaking on survivorship patient navigation to helping cancer patients and survivors like himself. The name, Walking Miracles, had a special connotation for him, as this is what he was called all of his life for overcoming the odds and defying the hopeless outlook given to him of the cancers he had as a child. Wilson states his philosophy as "I thank God everyday for giving me the opportunity to share what he has done in my life". A dynamic and passionate 2 time childhood cancer survivor, Wilson had Leukemia when he was 2 years old and non Hodgkin's lymphoma when he was 9 years old. He is now 26 years in remission. "As I examine my life, I am now 39, and I know God is not done with me yet. I have been a cancer survivor for 26 years and I have a unique patient and professional perspective very few people have
Often asked why he feels this way Wilson simply states, “WHY?” I have walked through the minefield of cancer already and I don't want you and your family to do it alone like mine did. Having had very little resource or help, Wilson and his family had their up and down feelings and emotions that one goes through mentally during his treatment." My family and I just blindly trusted the system and went through the process, we had no choice. You should not have to do that now. You have a choice and we can help by walking with you and guiding you every step of the way through your cancer survivorship journey".
Wilson came up with the idea in 1993 after his friend, cousin and math tutor Nancy Hunt passed away from breast cancer. He eventually said then I am going to start a center to help cancer patients 19 years ago and May 24th the first Founding Donors Dinner will be at the Holiday Inn Express South Charleston, WV. Special Guests include Sugar Ray Leonard, Landau Murphy Jr and Ryan Hamner a 4 time childhood non Hodgkin’s survivor. To buy a table for your company or family or for tickets call 304-550-9599 or donate online www.walkingmiracles.org.
