With Heads-Up from Sonitrol Audio Detection, Durham Police Stop Burglary at Triangle Cycle

“Being able to verify that a crime is in progress is a major advantage in keeping police safer and short-circuiting criminals’ plans,” said Chuck Harrelson, president of Sonitrol of the Triangle.

May 4, 2012 - PRLog -- When thieves shattered showroom glass at Triangle Cycles’ Durham showroom earlier this month, they didn’t hear an alarm – but the retailer’s “smart audio” security system ensured Durham Police were making arrests at the scene less than five minutes later.
Noises triggered the Sonitrol verified audio intrusion security system just after
10 p.m. at the showroom on Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd.  Sonitrol’s central station operator heard every move as the thieves gained access and moved around the facility.  Alerting police dispatch immediately, Sonitrol’s operator confirmed that this was no false alarm – a crime was underway that involved several burglars.  Police arrived about three minutes later, quickly enough to arrest suspects and prevent the theft of any merchandise.

“Being able to verify that a crime is in progress is a major advantage in keeping police safer and short-circuiting criminals’ plans,” said Chuck Harrelson, president of Sonitrol of the Triangle (http://www.sonitrol-raleigh.com).  “By providing a live audio feed of the thieves’ movements, the audio intrusion security system gave law enforcement a clear idea of what to expect, and the Durham Police did a great job.”  This week, Sonitrol will present certificates of appreciation to the police officers who handled the incident.

As municipalities across the country cope with budget challenges, businesses that eliminate false alarms by using verified audio and video security technology are helping conserve law enforcement resources, he added.  According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a staggering 94 percent to 98 percent of all alarm activations nationwide are false.  The advantage for businesses: police response times for verified incident alarms are typically far faster than the up to 45 minutes nationally for unverified alarms.  Throughout the U.S., the average response time for a verified audio or video Sonitrol alarm is seven minutes, Harrelson said.
