Meningococcal disease describes infections caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis. Since the early 1990s, outbreaks of meningococcal disease have occurred with increasing frequency in the United States. Neisseria meningitides, along with Streptococcus pneumoniae, have become the leading causes of bacterial meningitis in the United States. It carries a high mortality rate if left untreated.
To help educate people about the dangers associated with this microbial pathogen, the IAQ Video Network and Cochrane & Associates released an online video that discusses meningococcal disease and Neisseria meningitidis.
“The tragic death of a scientist working to better understand this organism brings to light how dangerous and quickly these microbes can cause harm to humans,” reported Paul Cochrane, President of Cochrane and Associates and the IAQ Video Network. “We hope this video helps to educate people about ways to protect their health from exposure to this organism.”
