Limbach Company Works on Nation’s First Commercial-scale Wastewater Geothermal Heating System

Limbach Company Works on Landmark Wastewater Geothermal Heating System

May 3, 2012 - PRLog -- Philadelphia, PA (May 3, 2012) - Limbach's Eastern PA Branch partnered with the Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) and Novathermal Energy to deploy the nation's first commercial-scale geothermal system providing building heat from domestic wastewater. On April 12th, team members attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Nutter, followed by a tour of the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant where the project was implemented.

"Many ecologically conscious individuals have searched for ways of harnessing the energy in the wastewater we create every day," says Limbach Senior Sales Rep, Steve Stelzer. "This product, with its unique filtration system, represents the first practical implementation that is able to harness that energy for use by building owners at a local level."

Limbach Eastern PA spearheaded the design and construction of the integrated system, which features Novathermal Energy's patented filtration device to transfer heat energy directly from sewage. The installation is attracting national and international attention by water companies and departments seeking to implement the technology worldwide. Currently, Limbach is working to standardize a design that will provide pre-engineered and containerized systems for buildings positioned close to a sufficient wastewater flow and a compact footprint for location of equipment.

Looking forward, the PWD has expressed long-term plans to expand their facilities' environmental protection portfolio with this resource recovery system.
