Curator for the show is Rene de Guzman, senior curator at the Oakland Museum of California. In addition to his position at the Oakland Museum, de Guzman is an adjunct professor at the California College of the Arts where he teaches curatorial practice.
Discussing the theme for the exhibit de Guzman said, “No other art form requires such precise coming together of chance, perception, and the mechanical means to make a good photograph. Conditions have to be right; the artist must have the experience and vision to recognize potential; and a camera must be at the ready to capture the subject.”
“The photographs I’ve selected are all consequences of this collision of factors. In no way should this diminish our regard for the artists however. They have played their part well to cultivate and then activate the fertile conditions from which good work arises. Through these artistic efforts, we are afforded the fine images before us born of elusive circumstances and happy accidents.”
Rene de Guzman will give a talk on the exhibition Accident, on June 1.
