May 2, 2012 - PRLog -- The English Learning Program (ELP) of John Robert Powers (JRP) and Rotary Club of Makati, Inc (RMCI) once again partnered up to provide scholarships to Makati public high school students this summer. This is the third and latest in a series of English Enhancement Programs that aim to equip top sophomore and junior public school students with the four macro skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

ELP is a unique program that integrates Teacher-led Classes, Conversation Club classes, and English for Specific Purposes (ESP).

•   The Teacher-led class is the core program that focuses on developing mastery in the English language. It has lessons in grammar (parts of speech, subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, etc.) and usage (sentence construction, thought organization, and other communication strategies).  This is comprised of 6 stages: Primary Beginner, Beginner, Upper Beginner, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, and Advanced.  Each stage is further subdivided into 3 levels.

•   The Conversation Club is the practical application of the Teacher-led classes. It focuses on enhancing the speaking skills of the students, as well as their discourse skills. The main aim is to develop the students’ fluency in spoken English.

•   English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is comprised of Creative Writing for Pre-teens and Teens and Business Writing for Young Adults and Executives.

Both JRP and RCMI believe that the training and discipline that this scholarship offers will give the students a chance to communicate more effectively.  This could later on translate to improvements in their studies, confidence in expressing themselves, and excellence in their chosen fields.

Screening started last March 28, 2012. The 20-30 students that DepEd-Makati chose were sent to JRP on March 30, 2012 for assessment. The final list of scholars and the program that they will take was released by April 3, 2012.  Classes for the scholars started last April 10, 2012.
