The 2012 RAV 4 EV results from the combined efforts of Toyota Motor Company and Tesla Motors, experts in the design and manufacture of electric vehicle powertrains. Thanks to their respective areas of expertise, Tesla and Toyota successfully created a battery-powered vehicle that weighs 200 lbs. more than a gasoline-powered RAV4 but accelerates at the same rate, and includes an equal amount of cargo space. The specifics about 2012 RAV4 EV have been kept mostly under wraps. Toyota has revealed their expectations regarding mileage: 100 "real world"-miles on a single charge.
The first generation RAV4 EV was successfully leased as a fleet vehicle between 1997 and 2003 in the state of California only. It was so popular, many of the used RAV4 EVs sold after lease termination and hundreds of them are still on the road today. Manufacturing of the RAV4 EV was discontinued in 2002. Despite a waiting list of RAV4 EV customers, consumer demand was not enough to justify continued manufacturing at the time.
The 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV will be unveiled at the 26th World Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition on Monday, May 7, 2012, in Los Angeles. Vehicle production will begin later in 2012.
