Jaipur : Priyanka Malhotra performed Kathak dance in Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur on the occasion of "World Dance Day" on Sunday, April 29, 2012. She performed Kathak in Lucknow Gharana style.
Priyanka Malhotra, a famous Kathak and Indian classical dancer, started her performance on the "World Dance Day" in Jaipur with Kathak on Sri Ram Stuti, "Sri Ram Chandra Kripalu Bhaj Man..." She also performed on a Gazal of Bindadin Maharaj, "Mujhe mat Roko, Mujhe yaar ke ghar jaane do..." and on a Sufism composition, "Ali Ali..." She concluded her Kathak performance with Kathak on Durga stuti, "Jai Bhagwati Devi Namo..." She was prompting applause of the audience on his excellent performance.
Lucknow Gharana of Kathak dance was developed in the court of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. He was the ruler of Oudh (Awadh) in 19th century. Wajid Ali Shah loved dance and music. He also learnt Kathak from Guru Durga Prasad and choreographed a Kathak dance, Rahas. Wajid Ali Shah performed this dance along with the ladies of his court. Obviously, Kathak got a wonderful patronage in the reign period of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah.
Lucknow Gharana placed an importance on the expressional qualities of Kathak. Hence, Abhinaya and Naatya along with Nawabi Nazakat (subtlety and grace) are the significant characteristics of Kathak of Lucknow Gharana. Unique vocal compositions like Thumri, Dadra, Hori are the world famous Kathak compositions of Lucknow Gharana.
Some of the renowned Kathak dancers of Lucknow Gharana of Kathak are Bindadin Maharaja, Kalkadin Maharaj, Achchan Maharaj, Lachhu Maharaj, Shambhu Maharaj and Pandit Birju Maharaj.
