The events will celebrate the history of women’s accomplishments and highlight the voices of celebrities, activists, authors, and politicians who are actively fighting against legislation that diminishes women’s rights today. The local event is hosted by Unite Women New York (UWNY), official state branch of Unitewomen.org. This national, non-partisan grassroots organization was founded by two women, one from New York, the other from Michigan, who discovered each other online four years ago, met in person two years ago, and, lamenting the sense women’s rights are moving backwards, decided to join forces. “I am overwhelmed with the support we’ve seen since we started this two months ago, and truly honored to see women of all ages, colors, and religions come together for this effort,” says Desiree Jordan, founder of Unite Women New York and Mount Vernon, NY resident. More than a thousand New Yorkers are set to assemble next Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the site of the Triangle Shirtwaist tragedy, 23-29 Washington Place, New York, NY, between Greene Street and Washington Square East. At noon, the 1.3-mile march down Broadway will begin. From 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., there will be speeches and entertainment at Foley Square, just south of Chambers Street. The event is free and open to the public, and women and men of all backgrounds are encouraged to attend and participate. Desiree Jordan and Cathleen London, M.D., Assistant Professor Weill Cornell Medical College, are available for interviews before and during the event. “Carolyn Maloney famously asked the question ‘where are the women?’ Desiree exclaims the answer: “here we are!’” About Unite Women New York: UWNY is an official state chapter of Unitewomen.org, a national grassroots women’s organization founded in February 2012 to protect and advance women’s rights in all areas of women’s lives across our lifespan. Working locally, we identify the common concerns facing women in New York and develop action programs to address them, in partnership with other groups that share our mission and our vision of a better life for ourselves, our children and generations to come.
