April 27, 2012 - PRLog -- IN DIRECT RESPONSE TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PHILADELPHIA’S PROPOSAL THIS WEEK TO REORGANIZE THE DISTRICT,  Mother Bethel AME (www.MotherBethel.org)  is hosting a “TOWN HALL MEETING” for parents and educators to express themselves about the plan. The “TOWN HALL MEETING” will take place this Sunday April 29, 2012 at 7pm at Mother Bethel located at 419 South 6th Street. Overflow parking is available. The meeting is hosted by Mother Bethel’s Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of POWER (Phildaelphians Organized to Witness Empower and Rebuild, www.powerphiladelphia.org ) at Mother Bethel. “Our demands are simple,” said Rev. Mark Kelly Tyler, pastor of Mother Bethel, who also holds an earned Ph.D. in Educational Leadership. “We want an immediate halt to any plans to close schools in the upcoming school year until more research has been done and we want the community to be involved in all phases of the plan, not just a token presence. I think it is absurd to say that we must pay for the District but we can’t have any say in how it is run and restructured. I believe that in this city, they once called that taxation without representation.” The following LOCs from Center City POWER congregations will be on hand to support Mother Bethel: St. Paul’s Baptist Church, Leyv Ha-Ir Synagogue in Rittenhouse Square, Old First Reformed Church, Rodeph Shalom Synagogue, and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Confirmed Speakers include: Helen Gym, Esq., of Asian Americans United; Rev. Leslie Callahan, Ph.D., Pastor of St. Paul’s Baptist Church; Rev. Kevin Johnson, Ed.D., Pastor of Bright Hope Baptist Church; Jeff Hornstien, Ph.D., President of the Queen Village Neighborhood Association; and Rabbi Eli Freedman, Rodeph Shalom Synagogue. Also invited, but pending confirmations are: Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, School Reform Commission Chair Pedro Ramos, and Acting Superintendent Tom Knudsen. There will also be an opportunity for members of the community to have public comment and go on the record with their feelings about the plan. The media is invited to attend this “TOWN HALL MEETING.” For more information contact Mother Bethel at (215) 925-0616 or go to www.MotherBethel.org.
