Jason Craighead is well known in the North Carolina arts community, not only as an artist but also as a member of the Raleigh Arts Council and a consistent participant in charitable causes, including the annual Works of Heart auction in Raleigh.
Deans is determined to raise awareness of the artist’s work in the Atlanta arts community through this one-man show.
“Compelling is the word that best describes this exhibition of new paintings by North Carolina artist Jason Craighead,” the gallery states in its description of the show, “combining strong and intense drawing with highlights of brilliant color.”
Craighead describes his work as an ongoing evolution. His paintings often begin as bare canvases on the studio floor. As the artist walks over them—and sometimes spills on them—in his daily activities, ideas begin to emerge. The canvases then earn a spot on the wall, where Craighead’s emotional energy and technical skills are channeled into finishing what began as nothing more than a floor cloth. In the artist’s own words, when he has finished a painting, “it has so much passion. It has been stepped on, walked on, dripped on, scribbled on and coated, and it’s just great.”
The opening reception for “In The Heart of the Butterfly” is Friday, April 27, with the Artist’s Gallery Talk following on Saturday, April 28. The show will remain up through June.
