New Heywood Hospital Book Offers Images of its Rich Gardner, MA History

PRLog (Press Release) - Apr. 26, 2012 - Gardner, MA - The new book Heywood Hospital was recently released by Arcadia Publishing as part of its Images of America series. With over 200 photographs, the book celebrates the hospital as a benefactor and major employer firmly entrenched in a highly supportive community.

Co-authors Gayle Kadlik and James A. Faust, MD, volunteered hundreds of hours to research and write this book. Ms. Kadlik coordinates library services and the continuing medical education for physicians at Heywood Hospital. Dr. Faust, recipient of the New England Healthcare Assembly's Trustee Leadership Award 2011, is a Heywood Trustee Emeritus and retired family physician who practiced at the hospital for 40 years.

It was at the Massachusetts Health Science Libraries Network's annual meeting in May 2011 that Kadlik found the inspiration, when librarian Cara Marcus presented a similar project on Faulkner Hospital. Co-author of a previous Images of America series book, Isles of Shoals, Kadlik was familiar with Heywood Hospital's archive of photographs and other materials, and realized there was an opportunity for Heywood Hospital to showcase its own rich history in the community while providing a fundraising opportunity for the hospital. Dr. Faust, her writing partner in the project, provided a wealth of medical and historical knowledge. In the State of Massachusetts there are only three hospitals that have captured their history in the Images of America series: Children’s Hospital Boston, Faulkner Hospital and South Shore Hospital, published this year. Heywood’s book will mark the fourth hospital in the state to publish its history.

The first in a series of book signings took place last week, with additional events scheduled at Heywood Hospital's annual volunteer dinner, the nursing alumnae dinner, and the annual golf classic.  The book is available at local book stores and at Heywood Hospital’s Gift Shop and library. Proceeds benefit Heywood Hospital, which is a not-for-profit organization.  "The book's dedication is to the entire Heywood Hospital family and community,” said Kadlik. “We hope all enjoy it!"
