Tens of thousands of people are expecting to receive payments as a result of the settlement, which was originally filed in 2006, after hundreds of individual suits were filed across Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi.
Residents of the trailers complained of illnesses ranging from respiratory irritation to more serious illnesses as a result of formaldehyde exposure. If a New Orleans judge approves the settlement, potential victims will have to file individual claims with the court. 10,000 to 20,000 claims are expected to be filed after the August decision.
Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable gas which is used in production of paper, resins, and building materials such as plywood. It has a strong, distinct smell. According to the Centers for Disease Control, short term exposure to formaldehyde can result in respiratory irritation; however, long term exposure has been linked to cancer.
