April 26, 2012 - PRLog -- Motorists in a Kent town are facing almost a year of disruption while roads are dug up to replace gas pipes.  “This is a major cause for concern as the disruption to the traffic will be severe” said the managing director of DCM Marketing Services “Rush hour will be, to say the least, a nightmare for motorists, it seems to be an awful inconvenience.”  The work in Maidstone town centre is part of a £350,000 project by Southern Gas Networks (SGN) to upgrade the local gas supply network. Temporary road closures will be split into three phases, the first of which began on Tuesday, with the whole scheme lasting 50 weeks. SGN said all shops and businesses would be open as usual throughout the work. “I understand that businesses will continue as normal, but when looking from a business point of view I ask, would you go into a shop to browse around with all that work continuing in and around that area? The answer is simple, No of course you wouldn’t as you would leave with a headache” Said our source for DCM Marketing Services.

Existing metal gas mains and services in the Stone Street area will be replaced with modern plastic polyethylene piping, which has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. In the first phase, from 10 April to mid June, Knightrider Street will be closed and the one-way order from Stone Street to Mill Street suspended. Managing Director of DCM Marketing Services said “The work all in all will take around 50 weeks - that’s almost a year. Yes I agree a year to complete road works does seem like an awful long time but consider the benefits. The piping has a lifespan of 80 years; I personally would rather endure a year of road works for the quality it will produce. I am positive the rest of the people in the area will agree with me on that.” said the Managing Director of DCM Marketing Services.

From mid June to October, Romney Place will close at its junction with Lower Stone Street. The final phase of work, from October to March 2013, will close side roads at their junction with Upper Stone Street. SGN apologized for any delays and inconvenience, but said the work was essential and disruption would be kept to a minimum.
