Follow on Google News | Record 110 472 new jobs createdPremier Noxolo Kiviet ambitiously pledged to improve the image of the Eastern Cape while “repositioning the province within the national developmental landscape.”

Amid applause, Kiviet said the province has registered a record creation of 110 472 expanded public works jobs above the target of 94 504 job opportunities in 2011. “In the coming financial year our target is to create 116 958 jobs.” In economic development, she said, the two industrial development zones (IDZ) were delivering the much needed investments. “The East London IDZ has secured private investors to the tune of R4.063bn in the automotive, aquaculture, agro-processing, renewable energy and business process outsourcing sectors.” The Coega IDZ has 21 operating investors which represent R1.24bn in private sector investments and has to date created 3 645 construction jobs and 2 985 direct jobs. In food security 46 co-operatives and 16 new entrants were established in rural areas of the Eastern Cape. Abandoned homelands’ erstwhile irrigation schemes like Ncera, Shiloh and Keiskamma Hoek were being revived to create more jobs. Kiviet also mentioned the massive infrastructural N2 Wild Coast toll road which would cost about R9bn and had been approved by national government and work would commence soon. She warned those who claim to be environmentalists won’t be tolerated in their attempts to block the project by taking government to court. End
