GZA GeoEnvironmental Completes Cost Cutting Design for Barrington RI Landfill Capping Project

April 24, 2012 - PRLog -- GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., a leading environmental and geotechnical consulting firm, recently completed a design project for the Chianese Landfills 1 and 2 in Barrington RI that resulted in a reduced cost to the town.

The original construction estimate was for $3 million using a 3 percent grade for the capped surface.  When town officials decided to use the capped landfills for athletic fields, the GZA engineering team was able to redesign the cap at a 1 percent grade reducing the cost to the town to $1.3 million. The eight-plus acre landfill parcel straddles Princes Hill Road and slopes downhill toward Brickyard Pond.

The remaining $1.7 million may be used to pay for the capping of the two other landfills in Barrington — one near the cemetery on Upland Way and the other just north of the DPW headquarters building. DiGregorio Construction was the primary contractor for the project.
“The bids that came in were competitive,” said Barrington Town Manager Peter DeAngelis, “To go from $3 million to $1.3 million, that’s very good.”
