Austin to Ban Plastic Shopping Bags in 2013

Austin City Council recently passed a law which will prohibit retailers from using disposable plastic bags beginning March 2013. Luckily, there are effective green alternatives to take their place.

April 24, 2012 - PRLog -- Austin is on the right track to claim a position as the national leader in environmental protection. As of March 2nd, Austin is the first major city in Texas to pass a ban on single-use shopping bags. Austin City Council passed a law which will prohibit retailers from using disposable plastic bags beginning March 2013. The ban has exceptions, including; one-use bags for bulk food items and produce bags.

The bag ban couldn’t come soon enough. It is estimated that plastic bags can take over 1,000 years to break down in landfills and the current global consumption is nearly 1 million bags used every minute. That figure is just incredible. While it may take consumers some time to adjust to the ban, there has been a boom in the availability of reusable bags. A huge variety of different styles, colors and designs are showing up on the market every day. You can now easily find reusable alternatives, such as, eco-friendly reusable bags, organic cotton canvas bags, recycled totes and non-woven polypropylene bags.

Here is a break down of just a few of the many choices available to retailers and consumers:

Non-Woven Grocery Bags http://www.printglobe.com/bags-and-totes/tote-bags-and-re... – Non-woven polypropylene bags have become a popular alternative to disposable bags. They’re an excellent choice because they’re affordable, durable, lightweight and easy to store. The majority of non-woven shopping bags can be washed and reused hundreds of times. They’re available in a wide range of sizes, styles and colors. They’re an excellent choice for everyday use because they are cost effective, easily imprinted and fairly long lasting.

Cotton Canvas Totes  – All natural canvas totes offer a highly durable alternative to ordinary disposable bags. They can last for years, are easily cleaned and are made of all natural cotton. Not only are canvas totes great for shopping, they’re perfect for the beach, toting books, poolside or vacations. These versatile bags have a lot to offer and are the perfect blank canvas for imprinting a logo.

Eco-friendly and Biodegradable Bags – Bags made of recycled materials, sustainable bamboo and biodegradable cotton are outstanding green alternatives to single-use disposable bags. Not only do these bags cut down on unnecessary use of disposable bags, they are made of earth friendly materials. Eco-friendly bags are stylish, send a great message and offer a bag option you can feel good about. Environmentally friendly bags are perfect for green businesses, food co-ops and spreading an eco-friendly message.
