Established in 2007/2550, CAMBOFEST is Cambodia’s first international movie festival event, screening international, Cambodian, and Southeast Asian contemporary independent features, documentaries, shorts, animation, and social issue movies.
Since the festival’s inception in 2007, several other film festival events in Cambodia have followed: the French government-funded Cambodia International Film Festival (2010); the Angkor International Film Festival (2012); and numerous other smaller showcases.
Yet the pioneering international Southeast Asian film festival continues to operate as a non-aligned, grass roots program, a rarity in the developing ASEAN nation.
According to the pluralistic mission of the festival’s founder, filmmaker J Rosette and co-organizer Phun Sokunthearith, CAMBOFEST seeks to help develop the re-emerging Cambodian film industry by showcasing compelling movies “from around the world”, regardless of donor or funding agendas.
From its launch until its half-century mark today, CAMBOFEST has relied on a significant local and international filmmaker fanbase to drive the event forward from year to year.
