April 24, 2012 - PRLog -- In a seminar conducted by ISA students’ Chapter of Heritage Institute of Technology Kolkata in association with Indian Vacuum Society on 24th April, Dr. R. K. Bhandari, Director, Department of Atomic Energy, Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Government of India, said, “India needs to fully exploit the potential accelerators in a large variety of fields to boost technological progress.” Vacuum Technology is an aid to the micro-electronics industry and it is also used in surface science, surface engineering as well as an instrument to cure cancer- a deadly disease paralyzing millions in the world. Focusing on the applications of Vacuum Technology, Heritage Institute of technology, organized such seminar to give the right exposure to the budding tech students of applied electronics and instrumentation so that they can understand the role of vacuum technology on charging particle accelerators which can be a boon to the mankind.
“From atmosphere to 1 millibar, Vacuum technology is used in mechanical handling, vacuum packing and from 10 to the power of minus 4 to 10 to the power of minus 6, it is used in cryogenics, electrical insulation, X-ray tubes and many more,” said Dr. Bhandari. Discussing on the utility of Vacuum technology on particle accelerators through a presentation, Dr. Bhandari said that unless there is vacuum in accelerator, the particles cannot be charged to hit the atoms so as to verify what is there in the atoms. “Vacuum technology is useful to charge high velocity particle so that it can hit the atoms to generate radiation through beams. Studying the patterns of the beams we can detect and verify the atoms,” said Dr. Bhandari. Giving the example of Crockcraft-Walton accelerator installation at Cavendish Lab in Cambridge, Dr. Bhandari spoke about the origination of particle accelerators which now came a long way. Then he also told about the Large Hardon Collidor at CERN which is the largest accelerator in the world. This had been created to produce a particle called Higgs Buson. This accelerator consists of 9300 magnets and it is measuring to the extent of 27 km tunnel which is embedded 50 mts app. below the ground. Here two beams of protons and heavy ions are circulating in opposite directions.
“These accelerators are used for cancer treatments, generating radio-isotopes for medical diagnostics, food preservation, material modification, cargo inspection and many more. In future it would be used for nuclear waste transformation” said Dr. Bhandari. He said that 5 years ago 30000 accelerators were there all over the world and now the statistics is more. “Each accelerator requires Vacuum technology,” said Dr. Bhandari. He also gave the examples of major accelerator centers in India which includes one in Kolkata i.e. Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre. Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre is equipped with latest technologies in resonance system, tanks, neutron detector, Gama detector, Multiplicity filters and many more. He described all the functions of those equipments in the seminar where the students got curious to know the same.
“We constructed Super Conducting Cyclotron which is 7th in the world,” said Dr. Bhandari. Then he spoke about Medical Cyclotron at Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre in Kolkata. This cyclotron will be generating radio-isotopes known as Thelium which will help to cure heart diseases. Apart from this, it will generate Gallium (Radio-Isotopes) which will help in curing cancer. Moreover there would be two more isotopes like Iodine for Iodine studies as well as Florin for cancer treatment. Dr. Bhandari explained Cancer Therapy with accelerated particles. “Accelerated particles can give high velocity protons which create radiation to treat cancer. It may cure cancer tumors in brains as well as spine which are very much difficult through other techniques of cancer treatment,” said Dr. Bhandari. Also he explained accelerators for nuclear power which produces high intensity proton beams to create 80 neutrons with the help of which thorium can be converted into uranium for preservation of long-term energy.
The seminar was also contributed by Scientist Gautam Pal, from Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), also a member of Indian Vacuum Society, Scientist D.L. Bandyapadhyay, Ex- VECC, and member of Indian Vacuum Society, Prof. A.K.Ghoshal, Prof., Jadavpur University and Member of Indian Vacuum Society, Mr. Probir Roy, Executive Director, Heritage Institute, Dr. Pranay Chaudhuri, Principal, Heritage Institute, Prof. B.B. Poira, Director, Heritage Institute, Prof. Arabinda Kr. Pal, HOD, Department of Applied Electronics, Heritage, Prof. Arun K. Ray, Heritage and Prof. Sreeparna Dasgupta, Heritage.
