Milwaukee reporter wins Al Nakkula Award

Denver Press Club names winners of $7,000 in journalism scholarships

April 23, 2012 - PRLog -- DENVER, April 23, 2012 — The Denver Press Club has named Gina Barton, law enforcement investigative reporter for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, winner of the 2012 Al Nakkula Award for Police Reporting.

Barton will be honored at the DPC’s premier event of the year, the 18th Annual Damon Runyon Award Banquet, to be held Friday, May 4, at the Denver Marriott City Center, 1701 California St. The club previously named prolific author, sportswriter, and HBO and NPR broadcaster Frank Deford as this year’s Runyon Award recipient.

The Nakkula award is named for the late Al Nakkula, a 46-year veteran of the Rocky Mountain News, whose bulldog tenacity made him a legendary police reporter, and is sponsored by the CU School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and the DPC.

“Gina Barton demonstrated the kind of bulldog reporting that personifies what Nak was all about,” said Tustin Amole, a judge in this year’s Nakkula contest. “She spent two years scouring records and tracking down victims and witnesses to reveal that the same people the public trusted to protect and serve them, were themselves guilty of criminal behavior. Her work not only represents excellent journalism, but personifies the kind of fearlessness needed to investigate those who hold positions of power.”

In addition, the DPC will introduce the winners of a total of $7,000 in college journalism scholarships at the Runyon banquet. The winners are Ben Welch of the University of Northern Colorado, Matt Miller of Colorado State University at Fort Collins, Amanda Moutinho of the University of Colorado, Steve Coulter of the University of Denver, John Gleason Jr. of Metropolitan State University of Denver and Dalton Ries of Colorado State University at Pueblo.

Each will receive $1,000 toward their tuition, a one-year membership in the Denver Press Club and a ticket to the banquet. Additionally, Welch was named the overall winner of the Tim Russert Memorial Scholarship, named after the late NBC newsman and 2008 Runyon honoree. Welch will receive an additional $1,000 toward his scholarship.

Runyon Banquet tickets are $110 and can be purchased online by noon Tuesday, May 1, at www.blacktie-colorado.com; go to May 4 on the Denver events calendar page. Tickets are $90 for members of the Denver Press Club, Denver Woman's Press Club, Colorado Press Women, the Colorado chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, the Colorado chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and the Colorado Association of Black Journalists.

This event is open to everyone. In addition, the DPC offers a $25 ticket to attend the VIP reception at the club, which goes from 5-6 p.m.

Each year, the club presents the Runyon award to a journalist whose work best exemplifies the vivid writing style of Damon Runyon, an early member of the Denver Press Club in 1906-07.
