April 23, 2012 - PRLog -- LAS VEGAS (April 23, 2012) – Robert Caldwell, a shareholder at Kolesar & Leatham, one of Nevada's largest independent law firms, was an invited speaker on international litigation as part of a conference sponsored by the American Bar Association (ABA) and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

The conference, “Doing Business in the United States,” was held last week in Beijing.  Speakers included Caldwell, diplomats from the United States and China, and attorneys from some of the most prominent law firms in the United States. Caldwell was the only attorney from Nevada selected to participate.

Caldwell specifically discussed issues relating to cross-border disputes, including an overview of the United States judicial system, differences between federal and state courts, and the logistics of conducting discovery in other countries.  He also spoke about what types of conduct can subject a foreign business to the jurisdiction of U.S. courts.

Nearly 300 Chinese lawyers and business leaders attended the event, which included panel discussions on various aspects of international law, as well as opportunities for American attendees to interact with their Chinese counterparts.

At Kolesar & Leatham, Caldwell has had extensive experience with legal matters that cross national boundaries.  The Las Vegas-based law firm has longstanding relationships with several foreign law firms, including one of China’s oldest private law firms.

“We regularly represent foreign businesses with legal needs in Nevada, as well as U.S. clients whose disputes involve international issues or parties,” said Caldwell.  “I was honored to have the opportunity to help Chinese attorneys and business leaders better understand our legal system and how it may affect their business. Our world is getting smaller, and helping foreign attorneys and businessmen understand our legal process is critical to supporting international trade.”

In addition to being a speaker, Caldwell helped coordinate the event as a member of the Governing Council of the ABA Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS), a national source of expertise in tort, trial and insurance law.  Caldwell has been a member of the TIPS leadership since 1998, having previously chaired its Business Litigation Committee.
