April 23, 2012 - PRLog -- Millions of Americans suffer from allergies and asthma.  One of the common culprits that cause allergies and can trigger asthma attacks is mold.  Although mold is all around us and is a natural part of the environment, elevated levels of mold in indoor environments can cause health concerns.

Typically if an indoor environment is suffering from elevated mold levels it is due to mold growing and releasing spores within the structure.  In order for mold to grow and multiply it needs a food source (many building materials and household items qualify) and moisture.  Without moisture, or elevated levels of humidity, mold usually cannot grow indoors.

“Very often when mold levels are high in a building it’s the result of moisture problems the building occupants are unaware of,” Susan White, Ph.D., CMC, President of Sussex Environmental Health Consultants (SEHC), a Mid-Atlantic building sciences and indoor air quality (IAQ) consulting firm.  “A leaking roof or faulty plumbing behind a wall could be creating an ideal environment for mold to grow in ceilings, walls and under flooring.  Although the mold growth may be out of sight, when the mold spores become airborne they will travel through ducts, cracks, electrical outlets and other means to occupied spaces,” she continued.

One of the best ways to find areas within a home, office or school that could be conducive to mold growth is by checking the moisture content of the air and building surfaces.  This can be accomplished using moisture meters, infrared cameras and through a comprehensive visual inspection.  If suspected microbial growth is found, it can be tested to identify if it is indeed mold.  Air testing can also help determine how much mold and what types are in the air the building occupants breathe.

SEHC has sponsored a video about the health effects of mold exposure that can be seen at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbKoonHwvHM
