Methodist University social work student named NASW-NC 2012 Toby Brown Award Recipient

The National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter has recognized BSW graduate Nancy May as the 2012 Toby Brown Award recipient.

April 26, 2012 - PRLog -- Raleigh, NC – Methodist University student Nancy May has been awarded the 2012 Toby Brown Award from the National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter (NASW-NC).

The award recognizes the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) student of North Carolina who best reflects and represents the ethics, values, and passion in the field of social work through exemplary performance in social work coursework, field placement, student social work associations, and community organizations.

This award program was established in memory of and to honor Dr. James S. “Toby” Brown who died in 1995. He was an Assistant Professor of Social Work at North Carolina State University and was a highly recognized educator and practitioner.

Nancy May graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Methodist University Bachelor of Social Work Program in December 2011.  As an active member of the Social Work Club at Methodist, Nancy helped develop a partnership with Face to Faith Homeless Ministry in Fayetteville.

One of Nancy’s greatest interests is in working for social and economic justice for the homeless.  In addition to working full-time, attending night classes and balancing a family, Nancy worked days, nights and weekends feeding the homeless, securing warm blankets and additional clothing for homeless families and children, and Veterans.

Nancy’s Social Work Field Placement was with Fort Bragg Family Advocacy Program where she has since been hired as a Victim Advocate. The Fort Bragg Family Advocacy Program aims to assess and prevent child abuse and neglect and serves victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Nancy will begin classes for her Master of Social Work at UNC Pembroke in June.
