Dr. Claire Sheff Kohn Brings Experience as Educational Leader to Role of Ethical Literacy® Coach

Former school superintendent sees ‘profound simplicity’ in Institute for Global Ethics methodology

April 23, 2012 - PRLog -- ROCKPORT, Maine – A former superintendent of schools in Massachusetts and New Jersey, Dr. Claire Sheff Kohn brings forty years of experience in education to her role as an Ethical Literacy coach for the Institute for Global Ethics. The IGE associate presents Ethical Literacy training to school superintendents, school board members and other public school leaders.

In Massachusetts, Dr. Kohn served as superintendent of the Masconomet Regional School District and the Hull Public Schools, and in New Jersey for the Princeton Regional Schools and Lawrence Township Public Schools. Her background also includes experience as a high school guidance counselor, assistant principal, and classroom teacher. Besides mentoring prospective and newly appointed superintendents in the New Superintendents Induction Program (NSIP), Dr. Kohn consults with school districts and professional organizations on matters of leadership, global education and ethical decision-making.

Dr. Kohn came in contact with IGE founder, Rushworth Kidder, in 1990 when she was invited to Camden to be part of a focus group about ethics and public schools. She has been connected with the Institute ever since. In addition to her own training in ethical decision-making, Dr. Kohn has encouraged many of her colleagues in educational leadership positions to attend IGE training and workshops in learning how to build school cultures of integrity. Most recently she brought a group of women administrators to Maine to participate in an Ethical Fitness® Seminar.

“I like the IGE approach because it provides a model, not a canned program,” says Kohn. “It is simple and profound at the same time. In other words, it organizes complex content in an understandable way, allowing students and adults to grapple effectively with ethical dilemmas. It also provides a framework for resolving ‘right versus right’ dilemmas. There are no easy answers, but it helps to have a practical tool for dealing with the tough ethical decisions of life. IGE provides that.”

A graduate of Stonehill College and Boston College, the IGE associate received her doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Dr. Kohn has been profiled in several educational journals for her work in revitalizing and improving public school systems while a superintendent.
