This includes the environmental footprint of the hotels, car rentals, tour companies and of course, the airlines.
“Green initiatives are an increasing priority for hospitality businesses that are trying to reduce their environmental footprint,” said Jenny Rushmore, director of responsible travel for TripAdvisor. “Our survey shows that travelers are interested in eco-friendly practices, but hungry for more information about which green plans and policies are actually in place.”
This might show positive signs that we are becoming much more environmentally aware however the survey also exposed another statistic that shows our pessimism towards the whole "eco-friendly"
41% of travelers surveyed said they would believe the eco-friendly status only if seeing it themselves first-hand. This demonstrates our doubt over large corporations putting the environment ahead of profits.
Additionally however, the Tripadvisor study indicated that 60% of travelers would be willing to shell out bigger dollars IF the facilitator was legitimately providing a lesser impact on the environment by making their establishment eco-friendly. In some case they stated a willingness to spend anywhere from $25-$75/night more for the authentic experience and satisfaction in knowing they are contributing their part to helping the environment.
Of all the tourism destinations considered by Tripadvisor (all countries), Costa Rica vacations came out on top as the most popular eco-friendly tourism destination in the world.
