April 21, 2012 - PRLog -- TARRYTOWN, N.Y. — Retailers and restaurants are launching tablet-based initiatives with blinding speed because consumers have made clear they want more control and mobile makes it possible.

Whether it’s placing a food order at Stacked Restaurants, or checking past purchases and reward points, such as at Sephora, shoppers are driving aggressive investments in mobile. Forward-thinking businesses see beyond the sometimes-unwarranted fear of comparison shopping to provide the experience consumers demand.

At the upcoming Mobile Impact Summit, Brian Pearson, CIO at Stacked Restaurants, will reveal how dining went digital. Stacked provides iPads at guest tables, enabling patrons to design their own burgers, pizza and salads (“Pickles? Yes! Anchovies? No!”) place their orders and pay for them. That move permits servers to focus on hospitality — refilling that frosty beverage and delivering dessert — rather than administrative tasks of meal order entry and transaction processing.

The concept of customer self-order, tableside, pre-dated the iPad, according to Stacked co-founder Paul Motenko. Stacked didn’t set out to market itself as “The iPad Restaurant”; the iPad didn’t exist yet. It was a matter of timing. Stacked was positioned to move forward with its mobile initiative when the iPad emerged as a viable option.

Many other businesses are looking to find the right technology to support mobile strategies to be deployed in the coming year. To that end, retailers and thought leaders from across a wide spectrum of mobile expertise will gather in Dallas at the RetailConnections Mobile Impact Summit June 24-26.
