New York Repertory Orchestra in Season Finale with Violin Virtuoso Robin Zeh - FREE!

April 21, 2012 - PRLog -- On Saturday, May 19, the New York Repertory Orchestra presents its Season Finale, in a celebration of life, music, and the joys common to both!

The program begins with Spanish composer Joaquin Turina's exuberant and boisterous Danzas Fantásticas, full of the revelry, excitement, ecstasy, and abandon of festival time in old Seville.

Next, the haunting and evocative tone-poem Death and Transfiguration by Richard Strauss portrays the memories and emotions of a dying artist as he looks back on his long and tumultuous life. A poignant and profound work by a composer only 25 years old!

And finally, we're thrilled to have the critically-acclaimed violin virtuoso Robin Zeh returning to the NYRO stage. She'll be appearing as soloist in the sublime Violin Concerto by Antonin Dvorak, one of the great masterworks of the solo violin repertoire.

Our program and the season close with an explosion of musical fireworks -- Don't miss it!

MORE ABOUT OUR SOLOIST:  

Acclaimed by the New York Times for her "stylish, committed playing," violinist Robin Zeh enjoys a career as a versatile artist in the New York City area and abroad.

A member of the American Ballet Theatre Orchestra and the Orchestra of St. Luke´s, she is also a frequent concerto soloist and a regular in Broadway pits. Robin makes a specialty of interpreting music by living composers, having just recently played the world premier of Steven Burke´s "Unseen in Air" for solo violin with the Pit Stop Players, and she has also given several commended performances as the first violinist with the American Modern Ensemble.

A graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Mannes College of Music, Robin was one of the last students to work with renowned teacher and chamber musician Felix Galimir. She performs on a 1998 Charles Rufino violin and has recorded with Naxos, Harbinger, Centaur and Buena Vista Records.

MORE ABOUT MUSIC DIRECTOR DAVID LEIBOWITZ:

Celebrated for his innovative programming and exciting performances, conductor David Leibowitz has achieved international acclaim for his work on the concert, opera, and ballet stage.

Mr. Leibowitz is the Music Director/Conductor and founder of the award-winning New York Repertory Orchestra. Some recent highlights of his tenure there have been a fully staged production of Mozart’s "Abduction from the Seraglio" and a landmark performance of Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 3. As an avid fan and champion of today’s music he has both commissioned and performed local and world premieres by some of today’s most important composers including Paul Moravec, Harold Farberman, Stephen Dembski, Steven L. Rosenhaus, Raphael Fusco, Michael Patterson, John Schwabe, and Salvador Brotons.

Since 2003 Mr. Leibowitz has held the post of Principal Conductor with the Massapequa Philharmonic Orchestra (NY) and is also the Orchestra Director at the City College of New York and the Stevens Institute of Technology (NJ). Recently, he directed the orchestra of the Siena (Italy) Summer Music program and from 2003-2007 was conductor at the Rome Festival Opera (Italy), leading opera, ballet, and concert performances. He is also on the staff of the International Opera Institute at the Maud Powell Music Festival Maud Powell Music Festival (IL) and the Westchester Summer Vocal Institute (NY). Operatic highlights include fully-staged performances of Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte, Don Giovanni, and Le nozze di Figaro, Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’amore, Bizet’s Carmen, and Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, all to critical acclaim.

Throughout the United States, Mexico, and Europe he has directed such ensembles as the Pleven Philharmonic (Bulgaria), the Orchester Pro Arte (Vienna), the Masterplayers Orchestra (Switzerland), the Orquestra Sinfonico de la Ciudad de Mexico, the Bach Festival Orchestra (Princeton, NJ), and the Brooklyn Opera and Dance Theater. Critics hailed his performances with the Pleven Philharmonic as “passionate and exciting.”

In the New York City area, he has conducted the Astoria Symphony, Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, Greenwich Village Orchestra, Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, Centre Symphony Orchestra, Sound Symphony Orchestra, and Music at St. Paul’s (Columbia University). He has been invited back to those ensembles and venues repeatedly.

In 2011, Mr. Leibowitz was an award-winner of the American Prize in Orchestral Conducting (3rd Place) and the American Prize in Orchestral Programming (2nd Place). He was given the “Gift to the City” award from the Omega Ensemble of New York for his ongoing contributions to the musical life of New York City.
