What Will Your “Act of Green” Be?

Simple ways to be energy-efficient in honor of Earth Day 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Apr. 20, 2012 - The 42nd annual Earth Day is just around the corner – April 22, 2012. To mark this important day, the Earth Day Network is asking everyone to do something positive for the environment as part of their A Billion Acts of Green® campaign.

There are many simple ways to be “green” at home, starting with your air conditioning system. According to energystar.gov, as much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. Here are some tips to save energy and perform your act of green:

Change your air filter regularly: It’s recommended that most disposable filters should be changed monthly. A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you cool, thereby wasting energy.

Install a Programmable Thermostat: A programmable thermostat automatically reduces heating and cooling in your home when you don't need as much, thereby saving energy and money. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website, homeowners can save about $180 a year in energy costs by installing a programmable thermostat and properly setting and maintaining the settings.

Regular Air Conditioning Maintenance: Regular maintenance of your cooling system can improve efficiency and comfort. Maintaining your equipment can prevent future problems and unwanted costs, according to the Energy Star website.

Replace Your Old Air Conditioner: The typical life span of an air conditioning unit is 6-10 years. If your unit is this age or older, it might be time to consider a replacement. Depending on where you live, replacing your old cooling equipment with a more energy-efficient system can cut your annual energy bill by nearly $200, according to energystar.gov. Check with your local power company because many offer rebates to homeowners who install a more energy-efficient system.
