Tech Institute organizes Film Festival

“All these films are critically acclaimed and not commercial movies. It is the enthusiasm that motivated us to organize the second Film Festival at Heritage,” said Sautraya Bhattacharya, a Btech 3rd year student of Heritage.

April 20, 2012 - PRLog -- From 20th April to 22nd April, 2012, the “Pravasana Club” of the Student’s Council of Heritage Institute of technology had organized a Film and Photography festival in the campus to screen different critically acclaimed films from various countries around the world. Pravasana was established by two duos of Heritage Institute, Mr. Aakashdeep Bhadra and Mr. Rahul Singh who are the current Btech students of the college. They were actively joined by Sautraya Bhattacharya and few more students to form this club to create awareness about film making and creative photography. “This is the second film festival which we have organized and in Calcutta it is very rare for a tech institute to organize such event. Moreover we have chosen to screen world’s best films which I think would be appreciated by the audience. Also this time we have organized a photography exhibition named “Focuss” which would showcase some of the uncommon photographs clicked by our batch mates and various other photographers”, said Rahul Singh President, of Pravasana Club. The Film Festival was being organized in association with Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) Kolkata and in this event some of the exclusive documentaries made by the students of SRFTI would be shown.

The film festival was inaugurated by Prof. Amaresh Chakraborty, Director, SRFTI, Prof. Shymal Kumar Karmakar, Head, Editing Department, SRFTI, Shri Madhu Sarkar, Director, National Academy of Photography, Dr. Pranay Chaudhuri, Principal, Heritage Institute, Ms Seema Sapru, Principal the Heritage School and Prof. B.B.Poira, Director, Heritage Institute. Other than them, Deputy Registrar, Heritage Institute, Mr Arvind Srivastava was also present. “This event is extremely interesting and such film festival had been organized aiming to appreciate the films which were not a hit when it was released but now they are famous throughout the world,” said Prof. Amaresh Chakraborty. He gave the example of Pratidhwandi, a film directed by Satyajit Ray and a Hungarian Film “Turin Horse”. Mr. Madhu Sarkar spoke about film as a self expression media of many people. He also emphasized on the role of Art for the society. “In the time when there was no communication, man use to talk through different gestures and emotions which is art,” said Mr. Madhu Sarkar. “I appreciate the students of Heritage for the way they look at their lives. Apart from engineering studies, they are much interested in film making, photography, bird watching and many other creative activities. Cinema making has taken a paradigm shift. It is now not about shooting through camera. It is about creative idea which can be transformed into a film and can be shot even through a mobile phone,” said Prof. Shymal Kumar Karmakar. He also spoke about Kitchen movie which can be shot easily like making of a kitchen garden. “You don’t need to pass out from SRFTI to make a film. Anyone having a creative idea can make films with the required training,” said Prof. Karmakar. Ms Seema Sapru also spoke about the significance of films as an aid to educate students. She gave the example of ‘Lagaan’ which gives an instance of leadership skill and is very much useful in teaching students. At the end, Dr. Pranay Chaudhuri concluded the programme and said, “Heritage not only create brilliant engineers but also complete human beings where each and every students take interest in various types of activities to unlock their hidden talents apart from placements and studies.” He also spoke about Aakashdeep Bhadra one of Btech students of Heritage who won the best film award in the National Category. Films like Turin Horse (Hungarian film), A Separate (Iranian Film), Pratidhwandi (Bengali Film), Elephant (English Film) and many more would be screened in these days.
