Are You DIY SOS or Grand Designs?

Do you do it yourself or get an expert in? Do you really save money taking on building projects yourself, or is it better to get an expert in?

April 20, 2012 - PRLog -- These days there are so many TV shows about property development or DIY. Most of them have an expert offering advice which is usually promptly ignored leading to a more interested show. After, all it would be a little dull if it all went smoothly.

In the real world, we want our home improvements to go smoothly with as little expense and stress as possible. Renovating or building properties by yourself requires a lot of time, money and the learning of a huge number of new skills leading you to wonder whether you saved the money you were hoping to by doing it yourself.

If you have ever watched a builder, electrician, plasterer, plumber or carpenter at work you will see at work a skilled artisan, someone who has worked for years to develop and hone their craftsmanship to make it look easy. Easy enough to make people ask themselves; “it can’t be that hard, can it?”.

At least the TV shows have a balanced view. Taking on projects that have been abandoned due to the lack of skill, money or motivation is also good viewing but it highlights the ‘other side’ of the equation when it comes to DIY.

There are just some things that are better left to the professionals. Do you really save money? When you consider the tools, wasted materials and the time there may not really be much in it. Could you be better off doing what you do well in order to pay someone else to do it faster and more efficiently than you could.

So it raises a big question. Who does the work for you? You need to find someone who you can trust and has a good reputation and some good projects behind them. If you don’t know anyone to recommend a tradesman then you can look towards some regulated trust marks.

One such organisation is FENSA (Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme) .FENSA is the Competent Person Scheme that is trusted by the window industry and you should look for their mark when choosing a window supplier.

FENSA scheme member Met Therm Windows based in Liss, Hampshire, supply Metal Framed Windows for Period Style or Heritage properties making them a specialist window supplier. They recognise the need to demonstrate credibility to their potential customers. In addition to great customer testimonials, having their FENSA logo visible on the site showing they are trusted and skilled  is very important to them.

“We go to great lengths to show our customers we are the right choice for them. As our products are specialist, we really recognise they are a highly considered purchase. Associations like FENSA help to show our quality processes are important to us” Says Sharon Boxall from Met Therm Windows.

Looking out for quality marks and associations, checking insurances and qualifications and following up on testimonials are vitally important. So maybe your time is best spent finding a quality tradesman instead of doing it yourself. Then you can be sure the job will be done in the way you had hoped, in a shorter time frame and who knows, maybe you will actually save money!
