Pirate Water Sports Brings American Made Stand Up Paddle Boards to the South East

April 19, 2012 - PRLog -- Pirate Water Sports is proud to announce our 2012 SUP boards.  We are custom builders of American made EPS foam Stand Up Paddle Boards, or SUP Boards.  We take pride in offering hand shaped, hand glassed, customizable boards to our growing list of retail and whole sale clients.

Our official unveiling of our 2012 Hatteras boards will be at the Carolina Cup SUP event, April 27th - 28th in Wilmington NC.  Here, you will have the opportunity to demo some of our boards, chat with our shapers, and meet The Pirate, our founder.

Our Process:

Our shapers bring 25+ years of shaping experience, insuring every board has met our strict quality control process. Each board goes through multiple quality control checks. We are not a mass-production facility – we take pride in our boards and it shows in the finished product.

Although most of the production boards on the market use 1.0 – 1.5 PSF foam, we at Pirate Water Sports begin with the highest quality EPS foam blanks available. All of our blanks are a minimum of 2.0 PSF foam. This provides a tighter cell structure, providing strength, lessening molecular space for water infiltration, and insuring extreme durability. Once the shape is cut on our CNC machine, we hand sand and finish the blanks to insure a level of detail that is not seen on import or mass produced boards.

After we have the perfect shape, we apply the graphics and airbrush artwork. This is applied directly to the foam – not on top of the Epoxy. By putting the paint and graphics on the inside of the exterior shell, you will never have to worry about your paint chipping, peeling, or wearing off. Most production board companies spray the paint on the outside of the board. After a few uses, the paint will scratch, chip, and show signs of aging.

After we have completed the artwork phase, its time to apply the fiberglass cloth. We use a minimum of two layers of cloth on our boards. The bottom has a layer of 4oz and a layer of 6oz cloth that each wraps the side rails a minimum of 3” on to the top surface. On the top of our boards, we use two layers of 6oz, both overlapping the rails a minimum of 3” unto the bottom side. This process provides 3 layers of 6 oz and 1 layer of 4oz fiberglass cloth overlapping the rails. Your board will be stronger and your rails will provide the added protection needed to help protect against rail damage and fractures.

Each board begins the glassing process with has a hand applied Epoxy Hot Coat. Once applied, the board goes to the UV curing room to insure an even and consistent curing. The Epoxy coating is the most important part of insuring a waterproof system that is strong enough to provide years of service. Once the board has fully cured, each board is inspected and sanded. The hand-sanding process prepares the board for the second layer of Epoxy Hot coat. Hand applied again, this adds another layer of exterior protection, strength, and durability.

Each board is finished with a professional buff and polish. A final quality control inspection – and your board is ready to enjoy the water.
