Friends of Lake Wapello
Lake Wapello has been a part of the Kerby family for many years. Like most folks in the area, Mike Kerby has fond memories of swimming there as a child. He and his family also camped there quite frequently. “Of all the places we’ve camped, our favorite place is still lake Wapello!” Mike says. “It’s a little piece of country that we love, very much.”
Mr. Kerby is President of a group called Friends of Lake Wapello that works works on park improvement projects “so that families can enjoy its surroundings for many years to come, just like we have.” Other members of the group, like Barb and Gary Hull, speak of the feeling of peace they experience the minute they drive into the park.
“That’s really what this is all about,” says Mike. “That’s why Friends of Lake Wapello exists and why we’ve organized this race. We all believe Lake Wapello is a special place, and we’re just trying to do our part to keep it nice for our community.”
The Shore to Shore race is a fundraiser for the volunteer group, all proceeds of which will go to park improvement projects for visitors. The 5k-10K race will be run on roads and trails throughout the wooded park and along the lakeshore. The terrain will be hilly and moderately difficult. For those less ambitious runners, there will also be a one-mile fun run, as well as a kids’ run.

Of course, if you love Lake Wapello but would rather not run at all, the group is always looking for members. For information on how to join the group, email friendsoflakewapello@
Whether you are a runner or not, you are encouraged to come out to the lake on May 5 and take part in a fun day for a good cause.
