AFL-CIO and United Way to host Workers Memorial Day Service

PRLog (Press Release) - Apr. 18, 2012 - United Way of St. Joseph County is proud to partner with The American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) to host the annual Workers Memorial Day Service on April 27, 2012 at 4 pm. The service will take place at the Howard Park Workers Memorial Site (on the River Walk) in South Bend. The Memorial honors all who have been injured or killed at work every year. This is a fitting location to honor those who lost their lives this past year as well as the heroes that continue fighting to make workplaces safer.

This year, in addition to the traditional service, a new award co-sponsored by CALMR (Committee for the Advancement of Labor & Management Relations), AFL-CIO, and United Way will be given. The joint award, entitled Union Management Outstanding Safety Award, will be awarded to local teams making great strides in creating healthy working environments. This year's award winners include: Teamster’s Local 364 & City of South Bend, Teamster’s Local 364 & City of Mishawaka, and AFSCME Local 1484 & City of Elkhart. The service will also educate workers and the general public about occupational safety and health.

Families of lost loved ones and the general public are encouraged to attend.
