One of the ways home owners can save energy is with a Radiant Ventilated Cool Roof.
This roof system combines Stone Coated Metal Roof Panels with Above Sheathing Ventilation (ASV) and Radiant Barriers which prevent 97% of radiant energy from entering a roofs attic space.
Attic ventilation is important to control moisture and keep cooling costs down. Heat can build up in the attic during summer months, and increase energy costs to cool the building. When it is in the 90s outside, the temperature in an attic can top 140 degrees. Correctly ventilating, insulating and sealing roof attics will keep them dry and reduce energy bills. Air conditioning accounts for 30% to 40% of a typical home owners energy bills.
'Above Sheathing Ventilation' ('ASV') can help reduce air conditioning costs and overall energy consumption. 'ASV' is a concealed ventilation and drainage channel formed between the roof sheathing and the roof panels. The lower surface of the ventilation channel is formed by roof sheathing covered in a radiant foil vapour barrier which prevents 97% of radiant energy from entering the roof attic. The upper surface of the ventilation channel is formed by the unpainted metal underside of steel roofing panels.
Without 'Radiant Above Sheathing Ventilation', solar radiation is absorbed directly in to the roof attic, driving up attic temperatures and associated energy costs.
With 'Radiant Above Sheathing Ventilation', the solar radiation absorbed by the metal roof panels dissipates in a radiant ventilation channel, and buoyant heated air is channelled by convection from the eave of the roof to the ridge and back in to the atmosphere.
In Winter, 'Radiant Above Sheathing Ventilation' serves as an insulating layer that reduces radiant and convective heat transfer between the roof deck and the underside of the metal roof panels. The winter heat loss from attics through radiative cooling of a radiant ventilated roof deck is 50% less than the heat lost by a regular asphalt shingle roof deck. This can save from 5%-10% in winter heating costs depending on where the home is located.
The number of air exchanges occurring in a radiant ventilated cavity averages 20–100 ACH (air changes per hour) and prevails almost 80% of the time.
This highly effective ventilation system can save home owners up to 25% in Summer Cooling Costs and up to 10% in Winter Heating costs compared to regular asphalt shingle roofs.
