Allegory by S. Gayle Stevens in the North Gallery

S. Gayle Stevens believes that in her body of work, Allegory, the “images are [her] memento mori; an
acknowledgement of lives passed, a rendering of fleeting shadows.” Stevens finds beauty in objects
that are often overlooked in everyday life. Allegory consists of a series of wet plate collodion tintype
photogenic drawings of plant and animal specimens Stevens has collected on walks near her home and
in her travels. “The silhouettes of the photogenic drawings are rendered as black shadows,” Stevens
states, “and echo the brushstrokes in Chinese calligraphy, sparse yet expressive.”
S. Gayle Stevens has worked in antiquarian processes for over fifteen years. Her chosen medium is
wet plate collodion for its fluidity and individuality; she especially delights in the flaws. Using modified
Holgas and Holga pinhole cameras, she produces small wet plate tintypes. She exhibits extensively
across the United States. Ms. Stevens received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago
in 1999. Called the "Alt Queen" by her students, she has taught alternative photo processes at the
College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn Illinois for ten years. S. Gayle Stevens lives and works in Downers
Grove, Illinois, USA.
The Center is thrilled to present Allegory, a solo exhibition by S. Gayle Stevens. Allegory is on
exhibition in the Center for Fine Art Photography’s North Gallery from May 4 – June 30, 2012. Please

beginning at 6:00 p.m. S. Gayle Stevens will also be teaching a wet plate Holga workshop at The

piece for The Center for Fine Art Photography.
