April 16, 2012 - PRLog -- Earlier this month, The Baltimore Sun reported about mold contamination forcing a family to move out of their Maryland home.  According to the news story, high levels of mold in the family’s home caused them to have to move out of their dream home and into an apartment.

The article reported that the family believes that the previous owners knew of the fungal problems.  The family had hired a home inspector before purchasing the home, but they did not indicate any problems with mold according to the inspection report.  Neighbors that were interviewed for the story stated that the home had been vacant for several years and that the roof had caved in due to a fallen tree at one point.  The damage resulted in extensive water damage and neighbors thought the home would be demolished.

Cases like these happen all too frequently.  There has been a spike in similar situations that many experts believe can be linked to the recent housing bust that created countless abandoned and foreclosed homes across the nation.

“Due to the recent collapse in home prices and spike in foreclosures, many investors and first time homebuyers are now purchasing these properties at bargain prices,” stated Susan White, Ph.D., CMC, President of Sussex Environmental Health Consultants (SEHC), a Mid-Atlantic building sciences and environmental consulting firm.  “People exposed to elevated levels of mold in indoor environments may suffer from everything from allergens to potentially infectious fungal pathogens.  Many people who have asthma may also experience asthmatic attacks as a result of mold exposure.  Basic testing and a thorough visual inspection by a qualified indoor air quality (IAQ) professional will identify these problem homes,” she continued.

SEHC has sponsored a video about the health effects of mold exposure that can be seen at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbKoonHwvHM
