This competition has taken a different approach to the idea of a beauty contest. The purpose is to develop these girls into young women who will be able to approach challenges in their lives and find success in anything they set their hearts on. The hope is that later in their career they will look back on this event as a learning and teaching experience regardless of their future endeavors in modeling, or not.
The Competition is divided into three distinct events: interviews with the judges, casual wear competition, and formal wear competition. Each event has a different purpose with the overall goal of finding the most well-rounded contestants, and providing different opportunities to display each contestant's unique personality.
The interviews are designed to highlight the inner beauty of contestants while beginning to teach the fundamental skill of personal interview presentation. As contestants learn these skills from 2012 Miss Teen's own trainers, they will be able to apply what they learn in their own future career. The interviews help to build confidence in participants and spark their perspective on the importance of a positive first impression . Personal interaction is a very important skill that is a key to job interviews later in life.
The casual wear competition is an excellent opportunity to showcase the casual personality of the girls. Contestants are challenged to select an outfit which allows them to showcase their personality, their confidence, and practice total body language. Outfits can even include competitive sport attire.
The final event this year was the formal wear competition. The contestants selected a formal dress, many choosing previous prom or homecoming dresses, and were given the chance to answer their division' s main question. A rehearsed modeling routine was also performed, and the girls were able to practice their routines beforehand with trainers provided by the competition organizers.
The competition was divided into 4 divisions: Teen (Ages 16-19), Jr. Teen (Ages 13-15), Pre-Teen (Ages 10-12), and Jr. Pre-Teen (Ages 7-9). Each division was given a unique main question early on the day of competition so they could really develop unique and personal answers.
