Give Us Names Partners With D.C. Community To Give Land In Symbolic Solidarity With Displaced People

PRLog (Press Release) - Apr. 12, 2012 - Give Us Names is partnering with Wangari Gardens to implement a community garden space in Washington, D.C.  This garden installation is a symbolic act of restoration.  Over 5 million Colombians have been forced to flee their homes and their lands, usually moving to the city slums in search of a new life.  This garden plot will be given here in memorial of the land that has been lost there.  The garden park is located between Kenyon St., Irving St., and Park Place NW.  Volunteers will begin implementing the garden at noon on Sunday, April 15th.

Give Us Names is a media-based non-profit organization working to restore home to displaced Colombians.  Last year they released the documentary Leaving La Floresta, chronicling the forced displacement of one Colombian family as a direct result of U.S. anti-narcotics policy.  They raised funds, and in partnership with Colombian farmers’ organizations, resettled the family into a farming community.  Give Us Names will be taking part in Days of Prayer and Action for Colombia, an event aimed at raising awareness about the role that U.S. policy has played in Colombian displacement.  This event will be held the weekend of April 14th-16th in Washington D.C.
