Football players automatically consent to a certain amount of inherent risk of injury when playing professional football; however, the story discusses the gray area between what types of behavior is considered legal and what types of behavior crosses the line into criminal behavior.
Former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is being questioned whether his behavior crossed the line into criminal territory. The legality of his tactics was called into question after an audiotape surfaced where Williams was heard urging the Saints defenders to attack specific body parts of certain players before a playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Williams has been indefinitely suspended, head coach Sean Payton was suspended for the next season, general manager Mickey Loomis was suspended for eight games, and assistance coach Joe Vitt was suspended for six games. A number of fans and attorneys feel that the punishments should be sorted out by the NFL; however, the more evidence that surfaces, the more likely it becomes that authorities will be getting involved.
The reporter from “Sporting News” was looking for input from a criminal attorney who would be more familiar with how the authorities might handle the case against Williams if formal charges are filed against him. The reporter called upon attorney Jason Zendeh Del for his professional opinion. Jason Zendeh Del, a former prosecutor in Fort Bend and Tarrant Counties who now owns a private practice in Plano said, “I’m very much in favor of the federal government staying the hell away from sports and letting them police themselves, “ he says. “But if I were a betting man, which I’m not, I’d say the feds are going to get involved. It involves enough people in enough different places, instances that occurred across state lines, interstate commerce across the country.”
