Vietnamese Coconut Candy Recalled Due to Unlabeled Presence of Milk

April 10, 2012 - PRLog -- Fung Shing International Corporation of Maspeth, New York has issued a recall of their Star Light Coconut Candy Keo Dua, which the company imports from Vietnam. The recalled candies are sold in a 7 ounce plastic dish with the UPC code 8936015503088 and have been sold in New York and Ohio.

The candy was recalled after it was found to contain milk during routine testing performed by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets inspectors. Milk was not an ingredient listed on the candy’s label, which puts people with milk or dairy allergies at risk if they consume the candy. While no adverse allergic reactions have been reported, the candy poses a serious threat to those with allergies associated with milk or dairy products.

According to a post on the Mayo Clinic’s website, “Milk allergy is an abnormal response by the body's immune system to milk and products containing milk.” Symptoms associated with an allergic reaction usually occur anywhere from hours to minutes after the consumption of milk and can include wheezing, vomiting, hives, and digestive problems. Rarely, an allergic reaction to milk can even lead to anaphylaxis, a severe condition that may be life threatening.
