Knowledge Resources always have a tempting array of books on sale, and – this year – it was really interesting to note the proliferation in books specifically on the topics of coaching and mentoring. Compared to 2011, where there was a mixture of books on leadership, human resources, management with perhaps only about 25% of the books on coaching and mentoring, this year's spread offered in the region of 200 different books on coaching and mentoring alone! The body of knowledge in our field is growing in tandem with the professionalization of the industry.
Mirroring this trend towards professionalization of the industry, COMENSA's path towards the implementation of the Member Criteria and Standards of Competence Framework continues at great pace. We have completed phases 1 and 2 of the pilot of our Member Verification Process on the path towards the implementation of our Member Credentialing Process. Accordingly, I include a bulletin sent to COMENSA members from Jonelle Naude of the Member Criteria & Standards of Competence Project Team last month:
"By now most of you are familiar with the Membership Criteria and Standards of Competence (MCSC) Framework, ratified by COMENSA ExCo in 2010. Although it felt like quite an achievement to have finally co-created this framework with COMENSA membership over a long 5 year period, the biggest challenge was still to come: how to engage with this framework in the most co-active and effective way.
Since July 2011 the MCSC-committee worked hard behind the scenes to develop a pilot process for the verification of COMENSA membership status according to the MCSC Framework. Our aim was to create, test and prototype a practical process that ultimately implements the MCSC Framework.
Since the criteria and competencies embedded in the MCSC Framework were created to benchmark universal competencies in coaching and mentoring - without giving any preference to a specific approach or context of coaching - we felt it necessary to augment this universality with the richness that diversity brings during the implementation process. As such, we invited accomplished coach trainers and facilitators from different and diverse coaching schools (approaches)
On February 13, 2012, we executed the first pilot verification day in Johannesburg. A number of COMENSA members graciously volunteered as 'coaches going through the verification process' and 3 were selected randomly to appear before the verification panel. This day only focused on one part of the verification process: the live skills demo. Much learning was harvested from all of the participants in this process: the coaches, the verification panel, and the MCSC committee. The second pilot verification day will be held on the 29th of March and will focus on refining the process from the documentary as well as competency verification perspective, after which a report will be tabled to COMENSA EXCO on the recommended verification process."
Please continue to support John Paisley and his Project Team's invitation to participate in compiling the means and methods of accrediting training providers. We ask for your positive and well-intentioned participation in continuing to help build a meaningful professional community.

Charging by the bundle – a boon for your coaching cash flow? By Michelle Clarke
I don't remember the source but I do remember the quote, "Coaches who charge by the hour do so at their peril." I learned this at a coaching master class program and it has had a major impact on how I now generate my coaching fees.
Of Devils, Details and Paintings By Nicky Terblanche
"The Devil is in the Details" This phrase has always puzzled me. Devils, I imagine, are not generally pleasant beings. The word conjures up images of a Hieronymus Bosch painting: a patchwork of contorted faces of desperate people, tortured by a deformed entity with an insatiable lust for inflicting pain and suffering. You get the picture.
