April 9, 2012 - PRLog -- Federal lawmakers designated the first week of April as National Asbestos Awareness Week.  The purpose of the designation is to increase awareness with the general public of the dangers associated with exposure to asbestos fibers.

Asbestos is a mineral fiber that has been used commonly in a variety of building construction materials for insulation and as a fire-retardant. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “…asbestos has been used for a wide range of manufactured goods, mostly in building materials (roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, paper products, and asbestos cement products), friction products (automobile clutch, brake, and transmission parts), heat-resistant fabrics, packaging, gaskets, and coatings.”

Some illnesses associated with asbestos exposure can take 20 or more years before they manifest themselves.  The Mid-Atlantic region of the country has seen its share of people that have suffered from illnesses due to exposure to asbestos.  Although tighter regulations dealing with asbestos were implemented beginning in the 1970s, many people today suffer from asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma and other respiratory diseases linked to exposure to asbestos fibers.  Unfortunately the material is still used in some products even today.

Sussex Environmental Health Consultants, LLC (SEHC), has been helping Mid-Atlantic property owners, developers and facility managers determine the potential complications posed by the suspected presence of asbestos-containing building materials. “SEHC provides comprehensive sampling, design and abatement services for asbestos-containing building materials. Asbestos management services are provided in support of real estate acquisitions, property development and property rehabilitation to clients across the region,” stated Susan White, Ph.D., CMC, President of SEHC.  “SEHC’s personnel are certified and licensed in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia and have extensive experience delivering asbestos management services for all types of projects.”
