Brian was even more focused going in to the second week of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour (NWSMT) 2012 season as evident by his 3rd place qualifying run behind Tim Brown and Frank Fleming. Brian said during the pre-race autograph session "I really believe the driver left quite a bit more out there and we should have been on the pole". The start of the race saw veteran Frank Fleming taking the lead over Tim Brown with Brian dropping to 4th behind LW Miller. It didn't take long for Brian to show just how dominant the #23 modified was as he passed LW on lap 20 for third and Tim Brown on lap 25 for second. The first caution of the night came out on lap 29 with a 3 car spin on the front stretch. On the restart Brian dropped behind the 40 car and methodically knocked on the door of the lead before finally passing Frank on lap 48.
The rest of the first half of the race went caution free. During the half time competition caution the team worked quickly on making the right changes for the second half of the race. On the restart just as he did the entire night Brian had them covered whether it was the 02 or 88. The car was hooked up on every groove of the .455 mile oval and despite several cautions during the second half of the race there was only one real scare when the 77 and 12 spun out in turn 4 just in front of the leaders on lap 115.
Brian led the most laps (103) and won the race by a margin of .603 seconds over second place LW Miller. In one of the most emotional Victory Lane celebrations ever Brian said while choking back tears and holding his precious son Carson, "I can't thank my crew enough... this past years been a tough one and they have really stepped up they are the reason I am still here... I didn't know if I'd ever be back here to be honest with you, those guys work their tails off. Man what an awesome race car they gave me. I can't thank them enough."
I can tell you there weren't many dry eyes in Victory lane as along with the team and family members, quite a few competiting teams came to offer their congratulations. From the cheering heard from the stands it was quite a popular win amongst the fans as well. This is truly a year of Renewed Spirit for the entire team and the team is now tied for the points lead heading into this weekends trip to South Boston for the South Boston 150 this coming Saturday.
With the win, the #23 Team has now earned a trip to Daytona in February of 2013 for the inaugural UNOH Battle at the Beach at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. Along with that great news, Brian will be back on Modified Madness on the Motor Racing Network (MRN) this Wednesday afternoon between 1 and 2pm.
