African American Women More Likely to Develop Cervical Cancer

A new study conducted by researchers at the University of South Carolina in Columbia promotes the idea that there may be a biological reason for this.

During the study, 326 white and 113 African American students took part in a wider federal health study. Every woman was given a Pap test – a lab exam of cells scraped from the cervix – and HPV tests every six months throughout their years in school.

The doctors saw large and extraordinary differences in how long the two groups’ HPV infections lasted. This was despite the fact that both the African American and white groups were similar in risk factors such as number of sex partners etc.
