April 6, 2012 - PRLog -- SPRING IS IN THE AIR: SMILE SETS OUT TO TIDY UP CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS PARK WELCOMING THE SEASON

SMILE does it again!  The group set its ambitions to enhance the community internally and externally by preserving the beauty of Christopher Columbus Park. On Saturday, April 7, 2012, SMILE will draw a slew of volunteers, local officials, and council members including Commissioner Byron Bustos, Ron Van Rensalier, Commissioner Maryann Capursi-Cordero, Commissioner Salim Patel, at Christopher Columbus Park to clean up and decorate the park.  The Mayor of the City of Passaic, and representatives of the Passaic Board of Education were also invited to take part in the park clean up project.

The event will host a milk carton-decorating segment in which the participants will have the opportunity to decorate the branches of the park trees with milk cartons, welcoming the spring.   SMILE Executive Director, Mr. Tariq Hussain explains, “The milk carton lanterns are a homage to the Japanese tradition of hanging paper lanterns on tree branches to welcome the spring.  It also demonstrates how beauty can be found in everything--even milk cartons.” The group will engage its residents in a fun filled day packed with hands on activities.

SMILE chose to tackle this new endeavor focusing on one of the community’s parks.  The group has centered its mission on enhancing the community at large.  Among some of the other seasonal projects the group has undertaken are a winter blanket coat drive, a series of food drives, and the homeless connect project and a food pantry.

The group continues to strive to enhance the Passaic community in unique ways.  SMILE is interested in bettering the community while fostering ties with its closely-knit community.  The Park Clean up initiative seeks to engage the community while beautifying the park and entertaining participants of all ages.
